Objectives

As much as 70% of all production is Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Per capita consumption on the other hand is also the highest in the world - almost 16 kilos (32 pounds) annually! Still, there is enough left for over 1/3 of the annual production (135,000 tons) to be exported. Greece holds the 3rd place among olive oil producers (2nd in Europe). As much as 70% of the overall production is Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Per capita consumption is also the highest in the world - almost 16 kilos (32 pounds) annually. Greek Olive Oil is mainly exported to the EU 90% of total olive oil exports (80% in bulk plus 10% Greek brand name olive oil). There is an export rise to countries such as Canada, Australia, Japan and the US. The high quality and the excellent organoleptic properties of Greek olive oil, which is exported in bulk, quietly is either bottled or canned to gradually acquire its unparalleled taste and aroma. General Objective: Sustainability oriented improvement of olive tree cultivation and olive products processing and marketing through cross territory partner cooperation in order to support the sustainable development of the Adriatic region.
Specific Objective (1): Strengthening research and innovation in sustainable olive tree cultivation and product processing and  marketing through economic, social and institutional cooperation among Adriatic territories. This is realized through Working Plans 4 and 5, which include in total 5 actions trying to identify and propose added value actions based on the olive grove. Specific Objective (2): Promoting, improving and protecting the olive related natural and cultural resources in the participating territories through joint studies and actions for identification, control and management of technological and natural risks, protection of the environment, energy saving and development of sustainable tourism. This is realized through a series of important studies including waste management, biological cultivation, tackling olive grove diseases etc. Also improving cultivation and processing infrastructure, access infrastructure and mobility in order to facilitate production, processing and transportation of the products. Specific Objective (3): Strengthening of existing networks of communication, dessimination and developing new information and communication services in order to facilitate communication and create stronger commercial and cultural bonds among the participating territories. This is realized through a series of exhibitions, student competitions, workgroup activities and seminars which in total may contribute in changing the attributes toward the role and the significance of olive grove cultivation.
